BPA and NPE in Household Products

BPA and NPE Identified in Over 650 Household Products

January 27, 2012

Over 650 brand name household products that contain either of two chemicals of high concern – nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) and bisphenol A (BPA) – have been publicly identified for the first time as the result of a Maine state law.

Twenty-five manufacturers reported their use of NPEs and BPA in consumer products sold in Maine under a state law on chemical safety.  Most manufacturers reported NPEs in household paints (291 products) and BPA in plastic toys (280 products).  NPEs were also reported in 61 other home maintenance products (such as cleaners and wood stains) and 14 personal care products (such as antiseptic iodine solution and hair care products).

The list of specific brand name products has been published online at www.HealthyStuff.org.

Why it Matters

Studies have shown that BPA and NPEs (nonylphenol ethoxylates) mimic the hormone estrogen. BPA is now understood to be an endocrine disruptor that experts say could affect sexual development in children, harm brain development, and may cause cancer. NPEs degrade into a long-lived chemical that builds up in the food chain, is highly toxic to aquatic life, and may harm reproduction and development in humans.
