May 20, 2010 (CPSC)
The commissioner of the CPSC has recommended amendments to the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) that would minimize regulatory burdens on manufacturers and retailers while still ensuring product safety.
In response to concerns from various stakeholders, The Consumer Product Safety Enhancement Act (CPSEA) of 2010 was drafted by a Congressional subcommittee to provide more flexibility in implementing various regulations under the CPSIA.
These include providing certain products, components, and materials with limited exceptions from the lead limits; not applying the lead and phthalates limits retroactively to products already considered safe when manufactured; clarifying that the phthalates ban does not apply to inaccessible parts of a product; and allowing the CPSC to approve alternative testing requirements for small manufacturers.
