In response to public concern, major retailers in Australia have begun phasing out baby bottles containing Bisphenol A (BPA).

Retailers participating in the voluntary phase out include Coles, Kmart, Target, Woolworth, Big W, and Aldi.  Australia's Parliamentary Secretary for Health called on other retailers to do the same as soon as possible.

The move was partly in response to an announcement earlier this year by the U.S. FDA that it is conducting further research into the risks of BPA for infants. The United States, Canada, and a number of European countries have already voluntarily withdrawn baby bottles containing BPA from the market.

STR is monitoring the phase out of BPA in beverage and food containers in the United States and other countries.
