Approximately 130 countries at the annual meeting of the Codex Alimentarius Commission agreed to set the first global limits for melamine contamination in food and infant formula.

According to the World Health Organization, the Commission decided to limit melamine in food to 2.5 milligrams per kilogram. The threshold for infant milk formula was set at 1 milligram per kilogram. This is equivalent to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s limits of 2.5 parts per million and 1 part per million, respectively. While these new limits are not legally binding, countries can refuse to allow the import of products determined to be below minimum quality.

STR's state-of-the-art testing laboratories have the capability to test for melamine and other chemical contaminants in food products. With laboratories and offices in over 30 countries across five continents, we offer a full range of food testing services to address every step in the global food supply chain.

For over 60 years, STR has worked with manufacturers, ingredient and raw material suppliers, exporters, agents/distributors of food, and retailers to help them develop comprehensive food safety and quality assurance programs.  For more information about our food quality and safety testing services, contact us by submitting the short form below:
